Inspired Today

I grew up watching sick television, from slasher movies and ‘Faces of Death’ videos to disturbing internet videos (let’s face it, midget porn is weird). I feel like over the years it has stolen a small piece of my humanity, to the point that I just turn away now when I know something gross is going to happen. I just fear that there will come a day when it doesn’t shock me.

I just watched 15 minutes of the most vile television I’ve ever seen. Some truly sick individual stood in front of a studio audience in a silk pink tie bragging about all the luxuries in his life. Then, in the boldest move I’ve seen since George Bush flew onto an aircraft carrier to declare the end of the war over half a decade ago. This pitchman then proceeded to use the Bible to blatantly extort $1000 from each person. His logic was CRAZY, but his delivery was all Billie Mays meets Jim Jones. This Dr. Mike was straight God ponzi to me.

“Jesus said what you give in my name will be returned to you thousand fold” At this point he started seriously talking about providing a small $1000 seed to his ministry to reap this unreal multiplied harvest in the future. SERIOUSLY! I’ll stand here right now and say you have a thousand fold better chance of realizing a return by giving your $1000 this Saturday to the Powerball Lottery. The wealth he is bragging about having is your $1000, don’t get it? OK, send me $1000, I’ll be glad to don a pink silk tie and mock you on television just like this snake oil man.

This wouldn’t bother me, but there is this whole other correlation with the recycling of the Mayan calendar perhaps giving these charlatans just enough credence to scare the same people who thought Obama being elected would bring on the anarchy. This Mayan calendar is nothing more than a very complicated way of counting to 5000. Hey, here’s a little hint, If the Mayans could predict the destruction of the earth, perhaps they should have started by predicting the complete destruction of their civilization and culture. Nothing is going to happen on December 21, 2012 that is any more extraordinary than the beauty and wonder of some new product to shill on TV.

I have had enough, this sensationalism has driven me to action. Humanity has to have a rational counterpoint. A forum and clearinghouse to defend rational people from the dogma and fundamentalism shoved down the throats of people just trying to find a little fellowship with his fellow man/woman/etc… I’ve finally decided that there is no choice but to don my collar and dust off my Certificate of Ordainment and take on the calling of…

three good things post for Monday
1. I am about to leave the seven hour Idaho Library Association meeting to get some exercise. OMG, long meeting! (and don't get me started on the budget!). The good news is: I did not overdose on mini-donuts or chips at lunch and I'm about to go do my leg day.

2.  I'm wearing one of my new bras and my hair looks great and my makeup is pretty. I love it when things all come together this way!

3. I love my dogs so much. And also my honey. I'm lucky.

In other news, our condo sale fell through because the assessment came in low. Ridiculously low, our agent thinks (it was based on one out-dated comp). So, we are putting it back on the market and will see how it goes. I feel OK about it.

I need some keys cut and prefer something downtown if I can, anyone know of a place downtown that cuts keys?

I am just trying to avoid going to Home Depot or another box store if I can.

Thanks.

Poppies available to wear for Remembrance Day?
Hi everyone,

Is there a place that sells Poppies for people to wear on Remembrance Day / Veterans Day (11 Nov.)

The red poppy is synonymous with veterans of World War I.

Please let me know.

Thanks!

planning to move to Las Vegas
Hello Everyone! I just joined!
My name is Melisa and I'm 27, from upstate NY. I'm considering moving to Las Vegas next fall. I'm currently trying to do research on jobs and apartments and such. I have no idea what's a good area to live or anything like that. I'll be moving with a couple of friends if everything goes as planned. can anyone tell me what areas are good, or what areas to avoid?

Another question, I'm a huge fan of Jrock! I'm wondering how many Jrock lovers are around the Las Vegas area?I'd love to make some new friends interested in what I'm interested in.

I have even more good things to tell you
1. I just finished the book The White Bone. Considering it's basically a book about elephants wandering around (written from the perspective of the elephants), it's amazingly engaging. I mean, even not considering that, it's engaging, but it's amazing when you look back and see that it's mostly "went here, ate shrubbery, went there, drank water, oh no humans with guns."  I got very attached to the characters, so when I went to Cost Plus today to purchase a whole bunch of stuff I don't need use a coupon and buy some gifts, I picked up a really cute elephant-shaped jade colored teapot to use at work. I love it.

2. I also stopped in at J.C. Penny and got a bra fitting. The lady that fitted me was awesome. First, I was right about my size, but she picked three bras off the rack that fit me like they were made for me, which has never happened before. I bought them all (on sale) and also ordered another one with matching panties. Whoot! I have pretty boobies nao!

3. Cost Plus sells Mexican hot cocoa, which is awesome spiked with Seagram's 7. *settles in with her next book and enjoys the cozy tipsy*.

How Can I File A Complaint Against Local HOA?
The HOA at my apartment complex sent me a letter that point blank and directly accused me of theft and vandalism.

I have some stepping stones in my porch area. I've had them in plain view for the duration of the two years that I've lived here. They have never been a problem before, security is aware of them, no one has ever mentioned if they could be a violation of HOA guideline, HOA has inspected my patio before multiple times.... You get the idea.

But the letter directly states that I have "stolen" these stones from one of the common areas, damaging and vandalizing the property's grounds. Bear in mind that if I had removed heavy stones, there should be some indentions from the rocks in the heavy ground, and considering the shapes, they should fit into any holes like a puzzle piece. But there's nothing, obviously, since I never stole anything from the property in the first place like they claim. Also of note, the stones on my patio look NOTHING like any of the rock types found around the complex. Mine are a completely different type.

They added more to it by saying that they are likely going to need to assess the damage that they think I caused, and bill my account for it. Again, my stones have been on my porch for two years, and there's nothing changed in the common area. The security manager knows I'm telling the truth, and offered to vouch/testify on my behalf if it comes to that.

Considering that they've committed libel against me with false accusations, and are trying to act against me over some imaginary crime, is there someone that I can report my HOA to? I'm not screaming "lawyer" or anything, but this sort of behavior is unacceptable, and I'm not going to tolerate being called a "thief", especially when their service to the property over the two years I've been here has been utterly sub-standard. And that's being polite in describing it.

Bottom line: The need to stop and get their facts straight before the let their imaginations run wild and jump to conclusions.

Any advice on some local organization I can talk to about my complex's batmess crazy HOA? I'm around the Summerlin area.

If you have a kiddo 24-42 months old....
UCSD is currently looking for children 24-42 months old to take part in a research study. If you have a child in that age range who does not have any developmental delays, and you would like to make $220 dollars, let me know and I will give you all of the info.

Your participation will help UCSD with their Autism research program and Autistic children, like my little girl.

The study is fun and painless for both child and parent. My kiddos have both taken part in it (one is autistic, one isnt) and it has been an enjoyable and informative experience each time.

They are desperately looking for children who are developing normally to compare with the autistic kiddos results.

Anyhoo-thanks for your help! Message me with your email address and I will send you all the info :)

three good things: weekend edition
I'm doing a twofer this weekend, so as to minimize computer time.

1) We went to a little nature center run by Idaho Fish and Game yesterday. It's always fun to look around the native plant gardens that they've built, and get ideas for our own yard. One idea that I found is that they cut holes in pumpkins and put them out for the squirrels, who were going nuts eating them. I did that this morning with two uncarved pumpkins we had out for decoration. It makes the "dog TV" (which is what we call our front window) much more exciting. In fact, as I typed this I heard barking and went out to see that a big fat cute squirrel had discovered pumpkin #1.

2) I also found the perfect birthday present for my friend Amy in the gift shop: a kit for making origami bugs. How fun is that!? She loves it, for which I am most gratified. I got it for her because she seems creative and she always stops to look at interesting bugs when we hike, but it turns out that she loves origami.

3) I went to a birthday party at my favorite bar last night (Bardenay) and had TWO delicious mixed drinks that I would never make at home. Some sort of hot cider with about six kinds of delicious liquor in it, and a hot buttered rum that you could cut with a knife and was totally worth every calorie. It was loud and cozy and fun to see friends.

Adventures In Parenting
Yesterday, after I picked up Reza from school and headed north to Averyboo in Long Beach. I expected about a three hour car ride. We made a quick pit stop in Del Mar to have the girl's hair cut. Note: Del Mar, SUV, soccer moms cannot drive for living dog shit.

As with any road trip I packed a bunch of snacks. Some nacho chips, raisins, cheese, crackers, cereal bars. This is in case the girl needs something to eat. Around 50 minutes away from the house she is complaining her tummy hurts. I ask her if she needs to take a poop and she says yes, so I pull over. No poo but I got a pee break out of her so I was a-ok. At this point she is telling me she doesn't want to get back in the car. I don't blame her and I know we got a good 90 min ride left. My instinct tells me maybe I should go home if she isn't feeling well, "just turn around Ivonne, they will understand". My instinct said go home, I didn't listen.

We get to Orange County and we had to stop again for the same reasons... this time she dropped a little log and I thought what was the end of it. Woo! I get her back to the car and change her clothes cause she had spilled apple juice all over herself somewhere during the trip.

I get back on the 405, which looks like a slow moving parking lot. It's Friday, rush hour, I am in the useless carpool lane that is backed up just as much as the rest of the lanes. Can I tell you how much I HATE the OC and LA county freeways? Just crossing those county lines makes my blood pressure and anxiety rise to rupturing levels. And then it happens...

Reza is going through a howling and moaning phase and she starts howling. FUCK. You try driving in bumper to bumper with a howling child in the back. FUN. We are at a complete stop and she says, "OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO my tummy hurts!!!" and I turn to look at her and in what seems like slow motion, Matrix style scene, I watch her vomit ALL OVER HERSELF. She is pretty much drenched in puke from the neck down, crying, I am in traffic and I FLIP OUT.

I call Josh, hands free thank you very much. "Josh, I got a serious problem!!!". I explain the situation:
1. I am in gridlock, very very far from home
2. I had just put on my last spare outfit on her and she just yakked all over it
3. I am about 10 minutes away from destination
4. how in the hell am I going to clean all this bullshit up??
5. FUCKSHITCOCKSUCKERGODDANMWHYDOESTHISALWAYSHAPPENWHENIAMBYMYSELFFUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!

He talked me down and in a nice way basically said, "snap the fuck out of it and deal woman. DEAL WITH IT". He didn't say that, but I know how Josh operates and he knows how I operate. If he can get me to simmer the hell down, the mother hen kicks in and I handle my shit.

How I managed to get from lane 5 to 1 in gridlock, with a screaming kid without hitting anyone? Don't ask. The entire moment was a BLUR. It felt like when you do the walk of shame back to your car, youre thinking to yourself, "who was that fool? why x 3? where is my car? and my god, why does my mouth taste like a cat shit in it?". Again, BLUR.

Plan of action! Find a Target/Walmart, buy her some new clothes, get some shit to clean the car, clean her up in the bathroom, clean the car.

So I get to Target, get out and assess the situation. Somehow she managed to puke in a way that it only landed on her and in the car seat. Thank jeebus cause I happened to be in the Volvo, Josh would have been sad bastard if that business ended up on the carpet. Either way, leather seats for the win!

I get her out, strip her butt naked, wrap her up in my hoodie, threw her in a cart while I proceeded to scoop CHUNKS OF PUKE out with my hand. You don't want to know what thrown up raisins, nachos and juice looked like. If this did not cement my utter hatred and disdain for raisins, I don't know what will. It was not pretty. Her underwear were DRENCHED, the only dry part of her were her socks. Subsequently, this lady gave me the total stink eye while this happened.

Word to the wise, if you see someone stripping their crying three year old and you got to see a small glimpse of nudity, IT'S FOR A REASON. You think I take my kid out and strip her in Target parking lots for FUN? You think I am doing it for her discomfort or my entertainment? FUCK OFF, DIE IN A FIRE AND MIND YOUR OWN BUSINESS. It is astonishing to me how quick people are to judge when they know nothing about the scenario. I had a total "punch the grandma moment" where I visualized myself flinging a gob of vomit chunk at her, just like monkeys and shit at the zoo. Looking back on it, I should have.

Anyway, we roll into Target, I sponge bathe her in the bathroom, get her in some clean clothes and cleaned out the car seat. I lined the car seat in towels, got her some 7-Up and bagged up a Target bag full of puked clothes and towels.

At this point what the hell do I do? She is clean and as it appeared, it was only car sickness cause the entire time she was in Target it was like nothing ever happened. My biggest moral dilemma was I was headed to a kids art center and if for some reason this was more than car sickness I don't want to expose other kids. So I called Natalie and she talked me into coming anyway.

Wise choice cause she needed to be out of the car, shit so did I and the idea of getting back in the car to do another 3 hours home was enough to make me want to rip out my pancreas (thank you LA traffic!). She had a very good time, as did I. Subsequently, it was nice to see my stuff hung up on a wall. (the tree stump sold to a very excited girl who loved my work).

Moral of the story:

If you have kids, carry a damn "bodily fluid explosion" kit. Clothes, towels, anti-bac wipes, plastic bags, febreeze, in the trunk of your car. Bee told me to do this years ago and I didn't listen... I heard her in my head saying, "I TOLD YOU SO" as I was scooping chunks of chewed up raisins with my hands. mmmmm, tasty.

So, when you think you got it bad, when you think you are having a "fuck my life" moment, think of this to kinda put shit in perspective.

Boll Weevil
Apparently Boll Weevil went bankrupt about a year ago, but the news story I could find only says that the company owned stores shut down and there were also 4 franchise stores, but doesn't say what happened to them. So, does anyone know what the status of the one in Kearney Mesa at the corner of Ruffin Road and Clairemont Mesa is?
